How to buy The art of God and the religions of Art by David Thistlethwaite
My book ‘The art of God’ (still in print in the USA but without the illustrations) was published in 1998. I have recently acquired a small stock of copies which I am selling for £9.50 including postage.
I would not like you to buy one without realising that it is quite radical and demanding (though written in an accessible style) and is the result of a long period of spiritual seeking, which turned my whole understanding of art upside-down, from a self-focussed one to one which I trust is God-centred. Increasingly I find art to be a great gift from God, and all the better if not misused, as we are inclined to do.
I do not take an unreservedly ‘optimistic’ view of art, since it can clearly be a power for negative as well as positive change in a society. But I find that if art takes a humble role, its power for good is tremendous. It builds people in their humanity and gives great pleasure. I call this sort of art, which is unselfconsciously good, ‘small art’, and it includes some great masterpieces.
